Who we are

We are twenty-two close-knit professionals, working in our individual specialties to create experiences that sparkle. We value respect and cooperation as well as skill and creativity. Together, our goal each day is to go home proud of the work we have done and ready for tomorrow’s next challenge.

What we do

We create experiences. Experiences that are strategic, conceptual, streamlined and perfectly designed to communicate. To do that we offer market, brand and customer analysis and strategy, conceptual ideas and art direction, branding and design, copywriting, user architecture and user experience design, front and back end development, social media strategy and creative and media strategy, planning and buying.

How we do it

Efficiency and smarts drive the way we work. Keeping our structure flat has allowed us to make our process collaborative and inclusive. That integration helps us to focus on the strategic and creative standards that make our work excellent by any measure.

Our people

Leadership

John Backe 

President, Chief Executive Officer

John has been a leader in media and marketing since starting in advertising at Saatchi & Saatchi Compton in New York working as an Account Director on Cascade and Liquid Tide. Next, he was Director of the Account Management Training Program for SSC&B Lintas Worldwide. In 1986, John joined the Backe Group, an investment and management company specializing in media properties. In this capacity, he also served as President/Publisher of Andrews Publications and Gulfshore Communications. In addition, he was active in the management of WDKY-TV, a Fox affiliate in Lexington, Kentucky where he increased national and local advertising sales.

Malcolm Brown 

Senior Vice President, Director of Client Services

Malcolm directs the client service function and is responsible for new business development. He has extensive experience in agency management, client relationship management, and marketing strategy development with a focus on the integration of interactive strategies and tools into the traditional marketing mix. His experience includes programs for international, national and regional clients in healthcare, consumer products, retail, business-to-business and professional services. His branding experience includes programs for The University of Pennsylvania Health System, General Instrument, Wawa Food Stores, Binswanger, and numerous pharmaceutical brands.

Boyd Maits  

Senior Vice President, Interactive

Boyd founded and manages the interactive division of Backe, which was the first of its kind among the Philadelphia region’s major marketing agencies. Boyd joined the company in early 1995 to build the interactive division. He oversees all digital online development. In that role, he is heavily immersed in the creative process and technical implementation of all web, eCommerce, Content Management Systems, and mobile applications as well as meeting our clients’ needs for online marketing. Prior to joining Backe, Boyd spent 16 years as a multimedia and interactive producer/director at LSI Communications in Philadelphia where he designed, developed and programmed award-winning applications for Fortune 500 clients such as AT&T, Bell Atlantic, Raytheon, Cigna, Wyeth-Ayerst, McNeil Pharmaceuticals, Mobil Oil, RCA, General Mills, and Campbell Foods.

Zeke Kisling

Vice President, Chief Creative Officer

Zeke has lived the discipline of advertising for decades. He has conceived, directed, and produced campaigns and other communications in categories like automotive, fashion, package goods and pharma, and has run creative teams large and small. He has supported brands, products, services, and programs for clients like Mazerati, DKNY, Absolut, Pfizer, and Deutsche Bank. Words and pictures that masterfully serve successful brands are his world. His goal is to make everything he touches more beautiful.
